How to wear winter shorts

30.11.09

I have recently come to the conclusion that when it comes to winter wear, one of my staples is shorts. It sounds pretty stupid, right? "And why not Moon Boots in the Summer?" you ask. There actually is a logical explanation to winter shorts: with the right amount of layering, they are pretty warm. And cosy. And comfy. And when it is really windy, you don't find yourself screaming for help because your skirt is on your head (it often happens to me, especially if I am pushing the buggy and both my hands are busy). So yes, winter shorts are my best friends. I have various options in my closet: denim shorts, woolly mum shorts, floral shorts, the list goes on and on. Today I thought I'd give you some ways to wear shorts in the winter without getting comments from your mum.
 At the weekend
On a date
For a party

Would you wear shorts in the winter? For what occasion?

OMG it is PAC MAN!!!!!

26.11.09

Just as I was about to leave my house this morning, the doorbell rang and the postman handed me a little parcel from Links of London.

They had contacted me a while ago asking if I would like to "try" some of their designs. Being a bit of an accessories nut, I obliged. I am quite familiar with Links products, but didn't own anything from there till now. As you probably know by now, if people send me stuff, I will only write about it if it is something I would have bought myself... I was totally excited when I opened the box to find a PACMAN NECKLACE. Yes. You read it right. A friggin' pacman necklace. Totally perfect, minimalist design, from the Links-ID collection. I LOVE IT. In fact I love it so much I am wearing it right now. I love it so much that I drew on the inside of my hand with a Sharpie and now I am going to have Blinky forever in the palm of my hand (TATTOO experiment NUMERO DOS?!?!).

Can you see it? No no, come closer. CAN YOU SEE IT NOW???? I LOVE IT. L.O.V.E.I.T. If you want to see it better, check it out here (it comes on a chain like this), I forgot to take a snap when it was still in the box, because I was so impatient to actually put it on.

Since I'm here, I thought I might as well show you my Christmas tree (yes I know, it is only Thanksgiving, by the way HAPPY THANKSGIVING, my American readers)... and well, today's attire.

Before you ask, yes, I do wear shorts all the time. Wait wait, here are the deetz: high waisted shorts that were originally high waisted jeans that were too big) and shoes from Urban Outfitters, tee shirt from H&M, actual boyfriend cardigan (as in, it belongs to Justin, shhhh, maybe if I don't say it too loud he won't notice - Justin sorry the black one is in the wash, I just had to borrow this one, hi i love you, hiya)from UNIQLO, gold locket from Disney Couture and well... the pacman necklace.

Now I am going to make a quiche. Bon app├ętit!

A new addition to the Luella family

24.11.09

I have mentioned it earlier on Twitter and since I was asked to show it, there it is. The Luella jacket. It is pretty much the perfect English countryside jacket, a bit like a Jack Wills one, but better. I needed something that would go with bits of my wardrobe that don't call for a leather jacket or a yellow coat. This is the perfect everyday jacket.
It is totally over the top preppy/posh/traditional but I love it. Probably because the codes are different in France, so for me this is actually "exotic" and "fun" rather than "something my granny wore to go horse riding". Actually, I would probably also wear something my granny wore horse riding, but this has nothing to do with the jacket, and more to do with my questionable dress sense.
Please ignore the blurb above, it is clearly filler. Instead, have a look at my new baby.

Miss Mademoiselle Robot - Adeline aka Lady Croissant

23.11.09

This week's Miss Mademoiselle Robot has a beautiful bag collection and shares my addiction to nail polish. She is a frenchie too but lives in Norway, lucky girl. She has a cute blog called Lady Croissant and has just published an interview with me on it (nothing to do with her being Miss MR).

I picked her this week because I am totally in love with that little bag, and the colour coordination of the outfit. I also love the slightly boyish flapper vibe of this otherwise super girly outfit.

Again this week, I was spoiled for choice, so thanks to all of you who participated! Keep sending photos, I love nothing more than starting the week seeing your pretty faces!

To add your photos to the facebook fan page, simply click on the Miss MR image in the right sidebar. It will take you to the fan page. Then you just need to add a photo to the wall, making sure you give me all the info you want to go with the image.

Mademoiselle Robot loves the Belles of the Black Diamond Field

20.11.09

Maximilla Lukacs & SARAH-SOPHIE FLICKER are friends. They are also the two beautiful talents behind cinematographic & artistic duo The Belles of Black Diamond Field. They base their filming on the Vulnerability Manifesto, that promotes an empowered femininity and softness. Their eerie & whimsical universe never fails to inspire and motivate me to create more, write more and have a universe I can call my own.

Just having coffee, listening to Kurt Vile(the young crazy one not to be confused with the German composer Kurt Weill)…it’s overcast. I am pleased.

CRAZY! INSPIRING! I'M HEAVING IN REHEARSALS FOR THE NEW CITIZENS BAND SHOW CALLED "THE DEBT RATTLE" SO....I HAD BALLET CLASS THIS MORNING, PUTTING COSTUMES TOGETHER RIGHT NOW, TRAPEZE REHEARSAL IN AN HOUR AND CHOREOGRAPHY REHEARSAL THIS EVENING... I ALSO DANCED WITH MY DAUGHTER ON TIP TOE THIS MORNING, THAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF IT ALL SO FAR!

I am really inspired by the ocean right now. I realize that I have directed my last two films in a bathing suit and that is not a coincidence. I love water. I love how scary and beautiful the ocean is… The abyss… The subconscious.  I am also super into the marriage of dance and film. Dancers are so incredible! Also super inspired by science and M theory and the notion of parallel universes!

ALMOST ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING IS INSPIRING ON SOME LEVEL... IT'S A HARD QUESTION TO ANSWER. OLD FILMS, MY DAUGHTER, DANCE, THE LIGHT AT MAGIC HOUR, AN OLD SONG, MAXIMILLA AND I ALSO TEND TO GRAVITATE TOWARD THE SAME INFLUENCES... BOOKS, POEMS... WHAT ISN'T INSPIRING? I LIKE THAT KURT VONNEGUT QUOTE.: "EVERY TIME SOMETHING STRIKES YOU AS BEAUTIFUL.. TAKE A MOMENT AND SAY "IF THIS ISN'T NICE, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS!"

I originally wanted to be a painter… I was in art school and I took a film class and realized that I could make moving paintings! That really opened a whole new universe for me. So I taught myself how to use film cameras and learned how to edit and I started making weird little art films. When I met Sarah we decided to join forces and put our magic powers together. I think that we are fairly psychic with each other at this point and as we are doing research for films I start to see the vision of where we are going and then it’s just a matter of finding a way to translate what we are seeing in our heads into something that we can share with the world. Films are magic, and they can put magic spells on people. So being a film maker is kind of like being a magician.

I'VE ALWAYS BEEN IN DANCE AND THEATER. I WAS ACTING FOR AWHILE IN MY EARLY TWENTIES AND REALIZED THAT I WANTED TO BE MAKING WHAT WAS IN MY HEAD! THEN MAXIMILLA AND I FOUND EACH OTHER AND IT WAS FIREWORKS FROM THERE ON...

We met when we were ready to teach each other a lot of stuff.  And we both grew so much I think from working together. I love Sarah! She is amazing! I remember when we were shooting our first film “Kill Your Darling” and I was trying to get this cheap video camera to look like silent films and with Vaseline on the lens and paper vignettes we somehow got there and she said “You can make things look the way I see them in my head”. So that is why we work together.

MAXIMILLA AND I RAN IN THE SAME CIRCLES IN CALIFORNIA FOR YEARS BUT IT TOOK US BOTH MOVING TO NEW YORK IN 2001 TO BEGIN A REAL FRIENDSHIP AND WORKING COLLABORATION. WE BUMPED INTO EACH OTHER ON THE LOWER EAST SIDE AND REALIZED THAT WE WANTED TO/NEEDED TO/HAD TO WORK TOGETHER!

My mother worked at a costume shop when I was growing up in Budapest, Hungary. So I grew up with a magical closet full of fanciful costumes that I would always put on and force my brother to put on as well and we would just PLAY! I loved it and I would invent elaborate characters and I always found that the clothes would take you to these amazing places in your head. So not much has changed. I think clothes and costumes are super inspiring so as far as fashion I tend to gravitate towards designers that create entire new worlds to play in like Alexander McQueen (Plato’s Atlantis! Amazing!!) or Rodarte.  Their clothes just make your imagination soar!

WHEN I AM WORKING ON A FILM OR A CITIZENS BAND SHOW FASHION INFORMS A LOT OF IT. IT CAN DICTATE A STORY, FLESH OUT A CHARACTER, SET A MOOD. FASHION ALSO IS AN INTERESTING BAROMETER OF WHERE WE ARE AT POLITICALLY AND CULTURALLY. THE 20'S, FOR INSTANCE, WAS A VERY FREE AND DECADENT TIME AND THE FASHION REFLECTED IT IN LOOSE, SHORT, HEAVILY EMBELLISHED DRESSES. WHEN THE STOCK MARKET TANKED IN '29, SO DID HEMLINES... THEY WENT WAY WAY DOWN AND NECKLINES WENT UP! IT'S ALL CONNECTED!

I really LOVE to mix things together that are NOT supposed to go together. I have always had my own style which is a lot of times considered pretty “illegal” by fashion standards... Someone recently described my style as “Masonic Flapper”. I grew up in a DIY underground culture so fundamentally I love things that people create themselves. But I like to mix that with fancy bits. I love beautifully hand crafted vintage stuff as well.

BLOOMSBURY GROUP MEETS FLAPPER MEETS SILENT MOVIE STAR MEETS ZEIGFELD CHORUS GIRL MEETS 1970'S BIBA MEETS THE MARCHESSA CASATI MEETS DUST BOWL SURVIVOR MEETS BALLET RUSSES BALLERINA MEETS HIPPIE GROUPIE ROCK CHIC... GEEZ, I DUNNO!

Andrei Tarkovsky, Egon Schiele, Vera Chytilova, Jean Dubuffet, Cy Twombly, Sarah Moon, Harry Smith, Agnes Varda, Man Ray, Stanley Kubrick, Bob Dylan, Lee Miller, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Salvador Dali, Woody Allen, Nikki de St. Phille, Patti Smith,  Hieronymus Bosch, Henry Darger, Anais Nin…They are
all uncompromising poets in some way with a pioneering spirit. Artists that create worlds that you enter and never wanna leave!

GOSH SO MANY! I CAN JUST LIST A FEW: EDNA ST. VINCENT MILLAY (POET), VERA CHYTLOVA (CZECH NEW WAVE FILMAKER),  ANDRE TARKOVSKY (FILMAKER), ALVIN AILEY (CHOREOGRAPHER), MARTHA GRAHAM (CHOREOGRAPHER), HELSEA BACON (AERIALIST) , RACHELLE GARNIEZ (SINGER/SONGWRITER), FELLINI (DUH!),THE MELIES BROTHERS (EARLY FILMAKERS), YELENA YEMCHUCK (PHOTOGRAPHER)... THAT'S JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG!

An Astronaut or a Pilot. Something that involved flying… I also really liked to draw on the walls…

BALLERINA, ACTRESS, CIRCUS PERFORMER....

This is kind of silly but I am terrified of vacuum cleaners!

DISAPOINTING PEOPLE, HURTING PEOPLE, NOT BEING A GOOD ENOUGH MOM!

When we started shooting our last film “Spell” right when we set up for the very first shot I was looking at the monitor and then looked at Sarah and I started crying. It takes so much work to get to that moment and Sarah and I had not made a film in years. So that was pretty beautiful! It’s pretty incredible to dream beautiful dreams and then get to make them come true.
Clearly watching Sarah’s baby being born is way up there as well. LIFE changing experience!!

"Spell" from Maximilla Lukacs on Vimeo.

THE DAY MY DAUGHTER WAS BORN! MAXIMILLA AND MY HUSBAND WERE THE ONLY OTHER FAMILY IN THE ROOM. IT WAS FAR AND AWAY THE MOST POWERFUL, ENDURING, PROFOUND, DAY OF MY LIFE! I HAVE NEVER FELT LOVE WASH OVER ME LIKE THAT BEFORE!

Miss Selfridge SS10

I have about 200 more photos, but you get the idea. This collection is all inspired by circus, carnivals and fun fairs, so it could only appeal to me. Miss Selfridge is going back to its roots of super girly girl, cutesy stuff, and it is a relief for me as I am getting so fed up with the rock chick look that makes it impossible to shop for anything without studs, rips, fringing or sequins. I also have some images of the new Topshop and Dorothy Perkins collections, but they will have to wait till tomorrow when I feel better!

Urban Outfitters SS10

Lots of beautiful pastels and powdery colours at Urban Outfitters, more luxurious fabrics and soft tailoring. Girly/cute pieces with an edge, embellished dresses, granny bags and grampa shoes, SS10 is looking pretty promising on the high street!, Mainly, they had a HOLGA CAT CAMERA!!!!!! (which is actually available on the website now| BUY IT!!!!)., I am going to cut this short now as I am very ill today and I also would like to show you the Miss Selfridge SS10 snaps.

Winter shorts, gold boots and Ossie Clark

17.11.09

The stormy weekend had the best of me and I decided to turn my bathroom into a hair salon rather than venturing outside. I gave myself a much needed fringe trim and experimented with some pincurls. My hair is fairly short at the moment and since it is naturally curly, pincurls tend to come out rather extreme if I am not careful. This time though they were ok, just giving the necessary amount of wave to my hair.

Cardigan from French Connection

These boots put an end to my desperate quest. I love them they make me feel like Wonder Woman and they remind me of Marc Jacobs' gold boots I had my eye on yonks ago. Basically, double you eye enn, you know it.

Also, I got the news in my inbox a couple of days ago that today, Ossie Clark was landing at the Outnet... After having a peek, I can say that the prices are super low and there are some pretty hot pieces. Below are the few things I would get if I hadn't already had an "ooops" moment this month.

Please, someone get your hands on these, they are too nice!
