There are plenty of new fragrance launches nowadays, so to say the market is saturated is an understatement. With endless tacky celebrity scents cluttering the bargain bins it’s always a relief when something new comes along that you know is going to deliver. Oliver Peoples, purveyors of some of the finest optical and sunglasses in the world have enlisted the help of luxury perfumers Byredo to create what can only be described as an avant-garde experiment in sight and smell. The two brands have created a conceptual set of fragrance and sunglasses inspired by synaesthesia. If you don’t know what that is (why would you?) it’s a rare neurological phenomenon in which the stimulation of one sense creates an immediate sensory reaction felt through a different sensory pathway. This interpretation of synaesthesia is realised by housing the fragrance in three different coloured glass bottles with the sunglasses coming in complementary colours, green, indigo and champagne. Will it recreate the sensation of synaesthesia? I can’t promise that but I can tell you that fragrance is beautiful, just like the shades.
