Tweed. Tweed, tweed, tweed. It’s just not my thing. It’s a bit old man right? A bit posh. What someone wears when they go fox hunting. But is it the fabric or the kind of clothes that are usually made from tweed that I have a problem with?
Lord knows I love a tweed trouser, especially a wide legged version. I suppose it is the classic tweed blazer that irks me most. To quote Morrissey “it says nothing to me about my life”. Harris Tweed however is pure virgin wool, dyed, spun and handwoven by Outer Hebridean islanders in their own homes and that’s a legacy that can’t be damaged by my perception of tweed as ‘uncool‘. To prove this point further ASOS have designed a slick modern collection of contemporary pieces each beautifully crafted from Harris Tweed. Obliterating my perceptions of the fabric are joggers, holdalls, backpacks, bomber jackets and sweatshirts (OMG!!!). Finally some tweed that I can get excited about.
