Monsieur Robot – The Subversive Slogan

I was catching up with some of my favourite designers from the various fashion weeks recently when a strange trend struck me. A trend that seemed to span the gulf between menswear and womenswear as well as the Atlantic ocean.
Remember the Sibling “Please Kill Me” jumper I gushed about a few weeks ago? Well that got me  thinking about slogans – in terms of fashion, the slogan is traditionally something witty (I’m being pretty free and easy with the definition of the word ‘witty‘ there) but as a classic example think of the “I’m with stupid” kind of slogan tee that’s been knocking around since the 70’s. The subversive slogans I’ve seen on the runways for AW13 feature the kind of phrases that would make Henry Holland wake up screaming in the middle of the night in a cold sweat. In fact they’re the kind of thing you’d expect to see scrawled across a bathroom wall or etched into the arm of a particularly depressed teenage goth. And therefore I LOVE THEM. Check out the Jeremy Scott slogan fest from his AW13 collection…

In London the slogans were as depressing as they were subversively humorous. With a good dash of typical British wit Matthew Millar told us we were “Born To Fail” while Ashish assured us that they were having a shit day.
What will your slogan say?
