What I am wearing / Layering

I don't know about you, but at the moment, I can never find anything I like in the shops. Even charity shops, vintage shops, nothing nowhere. Apart from Jeremy Scott dresses, nothing tickles my fancy. I could wear mine over and over and over, but that would get boring for everyone to see me wearing big cartoon eyes on my chest every day. Or maybe not. You tell me.

Dress - Jeremy Scott

But I digress... This is not my outfit of the day, you could probably guess by the length of my hair and the youth of my face anyway. Hiya pigeon.

The outfit below is what I wore to go and brave the cold earlier this week. I layered a M&S jersey sundress and a sheer vintage dress (shortened, what a surprise) to create some sort of subtle peplum effect. This outfit really is a mish mash of anything to keep me warm. Underneath both the dresses, I am wearing a long sleeve tee shirt, and a cardigan on top of it all.

I have had this vintage dress for a while but didn't quite know what to do with it. It was quite long (at least for me - just below the knee) and totally transparent. I only wore it once at its normal length and maybe once or twice when I was pregnant as it is a bit big for me. Then it got used as part of a Norman Bates dressed as his mother Halloween costume, which is when I suddenly thought about cutting it. Now I wear it often as part of some layered outfit or play around with textures (this dress + pvc leggings + cashmere cardigan + high heeled brogues = perfect winter outfit).

I generally hesitate a little before adding too many layers, as I am not a skinny little thing, so I can't bulk up too much, but once you add a coat, scarf and hat on top of all this, I turn into the Michelin man & it becomes hard to move around or even hold my phone in the street!

What are your layering habits? Do you triple your body weight in clothes when the winter comes?

Brrrrr I want to stay wrapped in my duvet all day!

Oh I can totally empathise with the whole michelin man thing! I always hesitate to layer too for the same reason, even if others say otherwise I'm always convinced I look huge when wearing anything more than just a top and cardi!

You look good, that dress is very cute!

Not a skinny thing!? Shh-- you're insane!

Today I'm ALL sorts of bundled up... two pairs of leggings, a dress, a sweater, leg warmers, a jacket, hat, mitts. Brrrr.

i just love that picture of you in the jeremy scott dress!

soo... i know what you mean about layering... when i lived in london, during the winter i constantly wore 4 layers... people thought i was nuts when i told them, but they couldn't tell.

but as a san franciscan, where layering is an essential part of life, i've learned that more thin layers are better than few thick layers. layering lace or fishnets over thick tights...with boots, there's nothing warmer. tank tops, with turtle neck tee.. then a silk blouse, with a cardigan or a blazer, not bulky, but it's warm.

I am really getting into layering. For warmth I usually wear a couple of pairs of tights at once, with socks, and boots. But as for other clothes I am loving layering summer dresses with warm tops underneath etc. I don't have much money for new clothes at the moment, and layering them together differently really creates a whole new look - as well as being warm!

  7. I just found your blog after stumbling onto your modepass and wow, you are so loveable! I am definitely returning.

As of tuesday I will be in the layering temperature as I'm going to Sweden, but here in Australia it's not really the solution unless you want to sweat your ass off. Layering always looks amazing on tall and skinny models, but when it comes to me, I have the michelin effect going on too. Sometimes it's the only way out as it's so freezing though....

I've got a couple of great black thermal tops which look nice under things and not too grannyish. I also have some silk thermal long johns which look more like leggings, amazing. A proper wool coat is essential, I have a great one I got from Zara a few years ago which never dates and goes with everything.

Also hats, hats always make me hot!

  9. SInce I live in the northern part of Norway, layering is not so much an option as a way of surviving. I've found that which fabrics I layer has a lot more importance than I used to think - wool or any kind of woolen mix is best, though silk and other natural fabrics also work well. Since I'm not one of the "twiggy" girls either, I find that I don't need as many layers if I just pick the right fabrics... though you still need at least three or four up here. Argh! I'll have to move soon...

Your blog looks really interesting, by the way, I'll definitely be stopping by again :)

Well you know me and layering...we're best friends and I don't care if I look like a Michelin man.... I'm gonna go ahead and wear 10 items at a time...

  13. Susie_bubble - The only thing that bothers me when I have all those layers on + my coat is that if someone calls me for more than 2 min, I find it hard to hold the phone as my arms goes numb from the layers.
I bet the Michelin man doesn't have this problem!

  14. Your Jeremy Scott dress looks so cool! I should really check out his stuff because it seems so humorous. I am not very familiar with his clothing but I know he is from Kansas City which is near where I live, and his dad is a BBQ champion around here.

i love love love the dress with the eyes on it!

i'm personally terrible at layering. I wear dresses so much because I don't want to match tops and bottoms and they look like you put in some effort... so my layering formula: tights+dress+coat. add cardigan and socks with boots if too cold. maybe a hat. ideally wear a turtleneck dress so you don't have to match a scarf.
