When Six Feet Under was on TV, I didn't have cable, so I completely missed it. My friends kept telling me how amazing it was, and I always kept in mind this show as something I had to watch. A couple of years ago, as I was spending the weekend in Paris, I found a VHS of season 1 among my things, so I decided to watch it. I had just lost my grandmother and it seemed like an appropriate thing to watch to take my mind off things without totally forgetting about them. I manage to see all 13 or 14 episodes in 24 hours. It was pretty intense, but I have done much worse since. I really got into the show, but as I associated it with a painful time, I decided to take a break from it...
...Till a month ago when I started watching season 2 (again after losing someone I loved), but this time I wanted to keep watching, because the characters had really grown on me. The female characters especially actually, as they are all extremely strong, each in their very own way. I like Ruth, for her totally calm & detached yet totally sentimental take on life, Brenda because she is the very definition of the modern woman. Margaret, I love because despite how wicked her character and how terrible a mother she is supposed to be, she is totally oblivious of the world and doesn't give a damn what people think . Vanessa I thought was just a devoted mother, and she is now revealing herself (i am on season 4) through depression & confronting her "cheating" husband.

My favourite of them all though is Claire. She has the same poetic detachment from life her mother has, but there is something in her that burns through. Teenage angst, ambiguous sexuality, she seems constantly caught in a limbo between child and woman. Lauren Ambrose portrays it perfectly.
Her look is timeless, she looks as if someone took her straight out of a Botticelli painting and put her in a TV show. I am a big fan of pale faces with very little make up, & her hair colour is just dreamy. Achieving her make up style is actually harder than it seems as creating a "bare face" effect & the perfect complexion while not caking your face up with foundation is a difficult task.I will never say it enough, but mineral powder is the best to get this type of result. Foundation is too strong, even the lightest ones. Just a hint of blusher on your cheeks and one layer of mascara. A sheer gloss on the lips and you are good to go. Beware though: this is definitely not for everyone!
Did you use to watch Six Feet Under? Who was your favourite character? Do you have a "natural look" you perfected over time?

I used to be so in love with Claire, less so when she became a quirky artist. There's an amazing Claire/Death Cab moment that always, always makes me happy.
ReplyDeleteWhich is interesting, cos Lauren Ambrose looked TERRIBLE in Can't Hardly Wait....
I loved Six Feet Under, but it was on too late over here for me to catch it every week - I have so far purchased and watched seasons 1-3 on DVD and will be treating myself to the rest soon!
ReplyDeleteClaire was always my favourite character too, I actually got into the series because a school friend compared me to her, in personality at least. I was later asked if dying my hair red was a conscious reference which it wasn't, but I don't mind the connection!
I loved the show, and I always loved Federico. I thought it was interesting to see how his family life ran parrallel to that of the Fisher's.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen this show in ages, but you've inspired me to re-view!

I really cannot describe how embarassingly addicted I am right now. I missed it the first time round too..I figured I couldn't cope with so much death talk but really, it's the opposite, somehow it's curing my fear.
ReplyDeleteI am currently on season 2; episode 2 & forever falling fruther in love with Nate. xx
We just started watching it all over again - we stopped around season 3 a few years ago, no idea why.
ReplyDeleteIt's weird, because the first time around I had never lost someone close to me (it lasted into my mid-20's, for which I'm very grateful), and now I'm watching it from a completely perspective. While I still love it, it makes me feel uncomfortable in some way.
I love Claire, although watching her gives me a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach. All the characters put forward this feeling of quiet desperation, but I think she does it best.
I watch a LOT of TV shows but I don't think I've ever been as absorbed by one as SFU. I didn't watch it when it was on TV either, just immersed myself in the boxsets one winter. When it ended I'm sure I actually grieved, haha so pathetic. Anyway, I loved Claire SO much, still do but I think Ruth was always my true favorite.
ReplyDeleteI was completely obsessed with watching this on TV but somehow I never watched any of the last season?! and am still waiting to be able to afford an ultimate boxset and finally watch them all. I had occasional crushes on Nate from time to time but I was completely in love with Justin Theroux as Joe in season 4. (and Justin Theroux pretty much all the time)
ReplyDeletealso Kim - I'm so glad someone mentioned Can't Hardly Wait, she does look terrible but that film's amazing!!!
Like Kim, I did get a bit annoyed with Claire when she went to art school. After she left and got a job, I totally fell back in love with her.
ReplyDeleteOne of the greatest compliments I ever received, despite art student phase, was being told by a friend how much she reminded him of me. And I'd love to have Lauren Ambrose play me in a film.
Love Claire, too. Oh, and Nate.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Germany
Brenda! Love this article about her from Ampnet:

I <3 Lauren Ambrose, she's so fabulous. I'm a sucker for red hair.
ReplyDeleteShe is so beautiful. I never used to like bare faces and thought they were boring, although this was when i was much younger. As i've grown up i've noticed the beauty in them, and i do try a bare face sometimes, although i will try mineral foundation in the future. Do you suggest any brand? x
