Travelling in style [redux -- MR on holiday]

Today, as I am driving to Paris, I was thinking of one of my favourite films, Two for the Road by Stanley Donen, starring Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney. I have rarely seen movies depicting so well love & marriage and how people deal with the ups & downs. It is also quite pleasant to see Audrey Hepburn in a role that is slightly different from the characters she normally plays. Let's say a more ''natural'' role. But my point wasn't to go on and on about this film, but to have a look at Audrey's style in the movie.

It is interesting because she ages in the movie and you can see her evolving style. If I had enough photos of me in my early 20s, I'd quite like to be able to see my style evolve and try to predict what I will dress like in my 40s or 50s.
Also, what I love about this film, and what made me think about it today, is her choice of travel outfits. A bit Jane Birkin, very Audrey Hepburn (obviously), practical, stylish without ever being over the top. A hard thing to achieve in my opinion, especially when it is time to hit the road!

What is your favourite travel outfit?

No bags at all if I can help it, and not heavy coats! I find traveling by plane exceedingly boring anyway and hate to carry any weight around.

I have a terrible / fabulous fleece brown cape that's fantastic as it doubles as a pillow and a blanket, so I tend to use that. Also, very large sunglasses. I can't do glamorous when feeling bored and cramped (and sleep deprived, usually, ugh)

  2. Its more of a running away look than a going on holiday look but ideally I try to channel Wanda:

In reality I generally have so many bags I have to be fairly practical and wear layers so I don't get too hot and frazzled, but when I can travel light with one bag I can be much more glamourous with a big winter coat, or puffy dresses and less sensible shoes. Of course ... I like best when I have my handy beau to carry my luggage and I can just swan about looking after the tickets.

  3. Bizarre that I had never heard of this movie! Thanks for blogging it, I'll see if I can rent it as soon as possible.

I prefer to travel light and by train across Europe. To me, it seems more interesting and stylish people travel by train and planes are over run by boring people.

  4. ❤ Vanda - I like multifunction items to travel. I always bring a big scarf with me that can be used as a headpiece, a scarf or even a sun shade if necessary!

❤ Bunny - Wanda has the right attitude! Especially for the size of her luggage...

❤ Quail - You absolutely HAVE to see this movie, it is wonderful. You are so right about travelling by train... Planes are a bit gross most of the time. I also like road trips on little country roads!

  5. My biggest travel thing is to always travel with just a carry-on, so you breeze past all the tourists waiting for luggage and onto your final destination.

  6. Off the point -- and I hope you forgive me because I know it's law that we all must worship Audrey -- but Hepburn looked anorexic to me when I first saw her movies as a kid, long before I knew what "anorexic" was. All I knew was that the pretty lady was skeletal.
