MONSIEUR ROBOT – RAF SIMONS 2011 OR 1995?

If you were clever enough to ask for money for Christmas (does Santa do Paypal?) then you’ll no doubt be knee deep in sale goodies. Nothing stings quite as much as seeing the gifts you bought for Christmas reduced in the sale only days later… I’m not foolish enough to actually get out of bed for the sales, there’s nothing stylish about queueing up outside a shop at stupid o’clock in the morning. Online sale shopping is the wise choice, and where better to look than Mr. Porter? From the comfort of my bed I shopped through the Mr. Porter iPhone app. Scrolling down the lengthy list of designers my first stop was Raf Simons, in fact, my first stop is always Raf Simons. So what’s on offer? Well the retrospective 1995 capsule collection is heavily reduced – it harks back to when I really loved Raf, but him and his designs have grown up and so have I; so the current collection can’t be ignored – here are my picks of both.

1995
In the 90’s Raf was all about sweatshirts, bomber jackets and an almost entirely black colour palette. These items are a self-referential wink to old school Raf fans and also a little gift to those of us who have stayed faithful. Best of all with  50% off at Mr. Porter it’s almost like 1995 prices too…
2011
In 2011 Raf is a little more sophisticated and years of heading up Jil Sander have led to a little cross-pollination between the two labels’ aesthetics. While I mourn the demise of his sweatshirts I can’t deny the knitwear is a more than adequate replacement. If the shoes and coats have always been out of reach of your budget – then now is the time to strike…

Can’t decide which you like best? Me neither. Sale logic however dictates that if clothes are 50% off you can buy TWICE AS MUCH. So perhaps I’ll get a little something from each collection. This is the only answer.
