Do you guys remember the “Becoming” series I used to run in the early days of the blog? The idea was to recreate outfits inspired by some of my favourite TV and film characters. I featured Angela Chase, Wonder Woman, Audrey Horne and more kick ass women. The series then stopped in 2009, I guess I got bored of it, or didn’t have time, or I don’t know what else – it doesn’t matter. The year is now 2016 and “Becoming” is coming back and this time, Polyvore collages have been replaced by real human interactions. Bonkers, right? To start strong, we worked on one of the most iconic sassy looks in the history of films (and I am not even exaggerating) – you guessed it: Sandy from Grease. No, not good girl Sandy, I am talking about sex pot Sandy of course. Ella and I share a common obsession with Grease, so this look imposed itself as the introductory one. We enlisted the help of Smashbox Cosmetics and Bumble & Bumble to create a modern take on Sandy’s 50’s meet late 70’s make-up and hairstyle.
Sandy’s outfit is actually very simple to emulate and you probably all own a tight black top, some skinny black trousers and a biker jacket. You may even own red stilettos. If not, the entire outfit featured on Ella is currently available on ASOS for under £70. The most interesting thing about this transformation is actually the hair and make-up. After setting up the lighting in the studio, I sat and watched as Ella was being made to look like Sandra Dee. From the choice of foundation texture to the colour of the contouring, every single step was carefully thought out by Carol Bicudo (using all Smashbox Cosmetics). Hair was left to the expert hands of Collette McGee, Bumble and Bumble Live Educator, who set Ella’s hair and then sculpted it into the iconic style.
