Mademoiselle Robot loves… Wendy Brandes

Wendy makes jewelry inspired by powerful women. Wendy has a blog & a very unique voice. If someone else made jewelry inspired by powerful women, there could be a Wendy ring!

❤ How would you describe your personal style?

I never know how to describe my personal style! I suppose I dress practically during the day, with a lot of black like any good New Yorker. At night, I try to wear something more colorful, that will be a conversation piece. It’s all about striking up a conversation.

❤ What are your inspirations? Designers / artists you admire most?

For my jewelry designs, I’m always inspired by women and history. I recently did a post on the inspiration for my Juana skull jewelry. One of my newest rings was inspired by a powerful Roman woman named Fulvia . For clothing, my favorite living designer is Alexander McQueen, and my all-time favorite designer is Ossie Clark.

❤ Which of your creations / accomplishments are you the most proud of and why?

I’m proud that I continued my jewelry business on my own after my business partner died. She kept the information on our manufacturers secret from me, so I really had to start from scratch. The whole story is here. It took me about a year to rebuild, which I managed to do right on time for the global economy to go to hell in a handbasket. I plan to persevere once again. That’s all one can do, right?

❤ Which trends do you think will be big this Fall? Which ones will flop?

I’m loving that jackets are back. I started wearing my old suits and suit jackets just over a year ago because I was so tired of the droopy dresses that everyone was wearing. Everyone looks good in a nice, tailored jacket. It gives good definition. I don’t think extreme dropped-crotch pants will catch on with the majority of the people, though the über-chic make those look divine. I do think a looser pants silhouette will slowly gain ground. People doth protest too much when it comes to that, but it’s a fresh look after all the skinny jeans and leggings we’ve been wearing. But I think it will be more of a spring look than a fall look.

❤ What’s the most fashionable city in the world at the moment?

As a long-time resident of New York, I’m going to have to say … New York! I’m biased and I admit it. Milan is fabulous and London is always edgy. Personally, I think Paris is overrated in terms of chic. I’m never that impressed when I’m there. Sorry, French peeps! But that scarf thing is tired. I think France’s First Lady, Carla Bruni, is looking amazing, but she’s really Italian.

❤ Which websites do you go to regularly?

I read so many fashion blogs. To single out two: My friend ENC of Observationmode is such a good writer, and Sharon Rose shares my Ossie Clark obsession. I like people with an original point of view. I feel like I read every English-language newspaper’s website. I prefer to get my news from print, whether its on paper or online, and not from television. I used to work at CNN and I have flashbacks whenever I watch TV news. Yep, before I was a jewelry designer I was a journalist.

❤ What would you wear on a date?

If I’m feeling energetic, an Ossie Clark dress or a vintage skirt. I have a Todd Oldham skirt that I really like. If I’m being lazy: jeans, heels, a black t-shirt, a sharp jacket and red lipstick. And always, lots and lots of jewelry. My record is seven rings, nine bracelets, two necklaces and one pair of earrings. I aspire to 10 rings eventually, but I have to size some for my thumbs.
