There are many great resources for interiors in Los Angeles, in fact, you can hardly walk (or drive) a mile without tripping on a (well curated) collection of knick-knacks. Consort is different. Launched by Mat Sanders and Brandon Quattrone, Consort is an innovative home decor concept, offering interior design services, a shoppable showroom and an online store. I visited their Melrose location and sat with the boys as they were about to fly out to NYC to open their brand new Duane Street boutique.
Hi! How are you? What’s on your agenda for the day?
Great! Today I (Mat) am in New York City staying on top of our contractor anxiously anticipating the launch of our NYC design studio and shop next week! Brandon is working on an exciting install and meeting with a few developers for a some projects coming down the pipeline for 2017.
How did you two meet?
We met at my going away party in Brooklyn when I was getting ready to move to California to launch MyDomaine. Brandon was on the design team at Soul Cycle at the time and the company moved him to L.A. six months later to manage their west coast expansion.
I just moved to Los Angeles from London and for the first time in a decade I had a completely blank space to decorate. I was fantasising about a modernist home and ended up somewhere much newer, so I had to work with the existing (or in this case non-existing) features… What’s the first thing you look for in a new space? How do you start the decorating process?
Every project is different but we always take into consideration the style of the existing space. We only ever love to do something to a space that feels it has always been there. Whenever we begin a project we like to spend time letting the home speak to us.
What’s your biggest challenge when working with clients?
Refining ideas! Kicking off a project is always exciting because we all bring so many ideas to the table. The biggest challenge is narrowing in on exactly what the client wants and setting that visual pace.
How and when did you decide to launch your store?
The LA market is saturated with California rustic home furnishings, and we saw a white space for a shop that speaks to a young, fashion-forward design lover. With Consort, we’ve taken a trend-driven approach to presenting a colourful space that’s equal parts playful and chic. We really wanted people to see themselves living in the space, so the store is fully decorated like different rooms of a house.
What’s your personal favorite object? Name one you have at home and one from your store, please!
At the store it would have to be our piece de resistance, a gorgeous 7 ft palm tree floor lamp by MVNGMNTS.
