I wish I could make this a scratch & sniff post as it is truly the only way to accurately recount the incredible experience I had in Grasse with Le Labo. Close your eyes and remember the sweetest smelling rose you’ve ever met. Now imagine standing in a field and watching thousands of roses bloom at the same time. Walk between the rose bushes, stop and smell the flowers. The leaves are still dewy and as you brush past them, they leave tiny scented memories on your clothes. These roses, the Centifolia roses, only open for two hours each day, only two weeks each year – a rare, ephemeral beauty.
These roses are harvested in May each year to be turned into Le Labo’s divine Rose 31, an unusual combination of ultra-feminine yet ambiguous Centifolia rose fragrance with warm, spicy and woodsy notes (cumin, olibanum, cedar and amber)… Gaïac wood and cistus give the fragrance a sensual touch, further highlighted by a distinctly physical animal note. Rose 31 is a mysterious, unisex scent, I’ve been wearing it since my visit to Grasse really enjoying the sweet reminder of my trip while never feeling like I am wearing a typically overly girly perfume.
mignonne, allons voir
si la rose…
qui ce matin avoit desclose
sa robe de pourpre au soleil…
a point perdu ceste vesprée
les plis de sa robe pourprée…
et son teint au vostre pareil.
